프로젝트 8. Get Comfortable with Visual Aids

Tomorrow is my birthday. What comes to mind when you think about birthdays? For most of us, birthday cakes and blowing candles are very popular images. But in Korea, there is one more thing that all Koreans can associate with birthdays – seaweed soup.
Yes, you heard me right. Seaweed soup. In Korean, it is called ‘미역국’. 미역 means seaweed and 국 means soup.
Today’s talk is mainly divided into two parts – what is 미역국, and why Koreans have this soup on their birthdays.
So, let’s dive in. What is 미역국? 미역 is also called sea mustard in English, wakame in qun dai cai in Chinese. More than 95% of worldwide production of this seaweed is consumed in Korea, Japan and China.
Here are some images of 미역국. As you can see, there are several different versions. 미역국 is basically boiled seaweed soup. It is usually made by soaking dried 미역 in water until it softens and adding seaweed into soup broth. The broth can be made from beef, chicken, or seafood such as clams, mussels, and dried fish.
Then it is seasoned with soy sauce or salt, and additional flavoring is added with minced garlic and sesame oil.
More than other Korean dishes, this soup has a special meaning to Koreans. In Korean culture, 미역 is traditionally associated with birth. This soup was given to new moms in Korea for weeks after giving birth since it was believed to contain necessary nutrients especially for them. Actually 미역 has high content of calcium and iodine.
미역국 is a reminder of mother’s gift – life and a reminder of the first food that mother ate and passed on to the newborn through her milk, thus brining good fortune for the rest of the year.
One last thing to remember- 미역국 on your birthday should be made by somebody else but you. It is considered ‘sad’ or ‘lonely’ if you are making your own soup on your birthday.
Seaweed soup might sound too foreign to you. But whenever you feel little adventurous, I recommend you to try 미역국.
