Good evening, Madame Toastemaster, fellow toastmasters and honored guests.
You may have seen or heard about this guy. Psy. Gangnam
style. Horse-ride dance. He is one of the most well known Korean musicians in
this country. However, today I want to talk about traditional Korean music –
Samulnori.
Before diving into details of Samulnori, I would like your attention to this chart on the screen.
So then, what is Pungmul? What are the similarities and differences with Samulnori?
Here are two images. I will give you 10 seconds to that you can take a closer look.
Originally four-men team on the screen was called 'samulnori'. They first performed in Feb. 1978 in Seoul. The new type of music they played were considered as revolution, an innovative approach to Korean traditional music, especially Pungmul. As a result, many young players started to follow the suite. Samulnori, once used as a proper noun became a common noun. Now it refers to a specific genre in Pungmul.
The Samulnori
ensemble generally consists of four main percussion instruments from
Pungmul- Buk, Janngu, Jing and K'Kwaenggwari. In
a minimal ensemble there will be just one of each, but you will also sometimes
see larger groups with four or more of each instrument. However, even in these
larger groups, the role of each instrument is the same.
Buk
A low pitched
barrel drum, played with a single wooden mallet. It is about 30 cm in diameter,
and made from a piece of hollowed out wood with a leather skin tied across each
side. It provides the bass pulse of the group.
Jing
A gong made of
iron. Sometimes hung on a frame, or else held by it’s handle, it’s generally
played with a large padded beater. It can also be played with the hands.
K'kwaenggwari
A very
small hand-held gong held in the left hand and played with a small hard stick. It’s
about 25 cm across made primarily of brass. The left hand is also used to damp
the gong. This instrument leads the group, signaling transitions in the music.
Janngu
An hourglass
shaped drum, each side covered with a different kind of leather. One side
produces a higher pitched sound and is struck with a thin bamboo reed, the
other side is played with a mallet and produces a deeper sound.
Rooted in farmers' music, meanings of these intstruments have been explained in several differant ways- Ying &Yang, Four season, four direction and more. However I would like to introduce my favorite - 'natural element' or sometimes called as 'festive shower'. Just like a shower, the music starts slow and quiet. However it gets faster and faster, ends in 15 mins. Just like a downfall.
Today I
talked about a special genre of Korean traditional music- Samulnori and its for
main instrument- 북, 징, 꽹과리
and 장구.
Before wrapping
up, I would like to show you the actual performance.
